It is unusual to take up the name of a cosmopolitan city as yours without any musical roots. But, when you love a city so dearly, you don’t mind adopting the city’s identity. And that sums up why Jayashri Ramnath is popularly known as Bombay Jayashri.

Trained in Bharatanatyam and Saraswati Veena as well as Hindustani vocals, Jayashri with a unique timbered voice, has made her indelible mark as a Carnatic classical vocalist. She has also forayed into playback singing with various films. Oscar nominated Tamil lullaby in 2013 film Life of Pi, theme song of blockbuster Bahubali and superhit track Zara Zara are some of her celebrated contributions.

In addition, she composes music and collaborates with musicians from across the world, be it artistes from Egypt and Finland. Beautiful with a radiant smile that lights up her face, Jayashri is soft spoken and measured in her words. Her recent performance in Shimla, which was a part of the annual Shimla Classical Music Festival at the iconic Gaiety Theatre, was hugely appreciated. Excerpts from the interview.

Egypt briefly opens Gaza border after PA assumes full control of Rafah crossing

Hamas’s move was part of the implementation of its Palestinian reconciliation deal with PA President Mahmoud Abbas’s Fatah party.

The terror group removed its forces from Rafah, and now PA security forces stand guard with a framed portrait of Abbas hanging on the crossing’s gates adjacent to a portrait of Egyptian President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi.

Egypt’s government played a central role in mediating the recent reconciliation pact between the rival Palestinian factions, and is expected to arbitrate additional talks in Cairo during the coming weeks regarding the expansion of the PA’s rule in Gaza.

The Palestinian unity deal, announced in October, will see Fatah end sanctions on Hamas in return for allowing the PA to regain full control of Gaza by Dec. 1. The Israeli government reacted to the unity deal by calling for Hamas to disarm and recognize Israel.
